2022 NBA Draft Profile: Max Christie
Here's why Michigan State's Max Christie could be the steal of the draft.
Welcome to The Hawks Collective newsletter! Atlanta had a disappointing yet promising season led by the continued stardom of Trae Young, Onyeka Okongwu’s development as the center of the future, and plenty more. The NBA draft takes place on June 23, so we’ll be profiling several players who the Hawks may consider selecting with its No. 16 and No. 44 picks. Today’s subject: Max Christie of Michigan State

Statistical Profile
The Basics: 30.8 minutes, 9.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists
Efficiency: 42.9% on twos, 31.7% on threes, 82.4% on free throws
Advanced: 18.1% usage, 8.6% assist rate, 1.0% steal rate, 1.7% block rate
Misc: Holds the Team USA single-game 3-point record (eight made) at the U16 level, started all 35 games as a true freshman
The Intrigue
Despite the numbers, Christie has a sound jumper; the release is quick, his lower body is squared, and will certainly draw closeouts as a spot-up threat.
His off-ball value also extends as a movement shooter who can run off-screens (such as a floppy action) or fire with zero hesitation off a handoff.
A capable defender that excels off-the-ball, utilizing his anticipation, shot-contest skills, and lateral mobility.
Over the last five seasons, head coach Tom Izzo has only started three freshmen in 95-percent of the team’s games — that group includes Jaren Jackson Jr., Miles Bridges (two lottery picks), and Max Christie. This is very indicative of Christie’s maturity & trust gained by his coach, which is an important aspect overlooked in prospect evaluation.
Areas of Improvement
Doesn’t create a lot of separation on self-created mid-range pull-ups, partially due to his lack of explosiveness and loose handle.
Similar to those concerns, Christie often gets blocked at the rim & struggles to adjust his body as a finisher.
He often gets caught up in screens & can be pushed around due to his slender frame; though these are fixable issues as he puts on weight at the next level.
Team Fit
Should the Hawks draft him at 44? Yes
The Hawks will look for shooting and defense in wings, both of which Christie provides. His mix of stability for the now & upside for the future could be an intriguing play for the Hawks in the second round, baring he falls to No. 44. He projects in a somewhat similar role to Kevin Huerter with the potential to grow into a Jordan Poole esc shot-maker.
